Medical implants are more and more widespread in modern society. Elder people, the most beneficiary of them, are also more exposed to other therapeutic procedures. Smart implants will ease their everyday life. The talk will discuss the development of a suitable and generic multidisciplinary framework, with a material and electromagnetic focused approach, for smart and multifunctional medical devices for body-centric communication system. The chance to make use of (metallic) alloys, widely used as medical implants, for new devices with important additional functionalities constitutes the main challenges of the research. The developed devices, potentially compatible with load-bearing orthopaedic uses, target advanced functions due to the presence of printed antenna for intra-body communication. Such concealed architectural and mechanical structures implanted inside the body, can be exploited in different scenarios: communication with an external base station eliminating the necessity of the human being exposure to additional manual screening or reducing social differentiation / discrimination, e.g., when people with implants need to be distinctly scanned at the airport or excluded from Magnetic Resonance Imaging, respectively.
